Grubhub CEO letter to Congressional leaders in support of urgent funding for restaurants

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi

Speaker of the House of Representatives

The Honorable Kevin McCarthy

Republican Leader, House of Representatives

The Honorable Mitch McConnell

Majority Leader, US Senate

The Honorable Chuck Schumer

Minority Leader, US Senate

Dear Speaker Pelosi and Leaders Schumer, McCarthy, and McConnell:

Local restaurants across the country continue to face immeasurable challenges driven by the ongoing  COVID-19 pandemic and further complicated by the omicron variant. Coupled with soaring operating costs, widespread labor shortages, winter business slowdowns and customer uncertainty, America’s restaurants continue to face a recipe for disaster that touches every community and threatens millions of workers.

The American Rescue Plan rose to that challenge last year by creating the initial Restaurant Recovery Fund and critical Small Business Administration infrastructure for disseminating grants. However, due to overwhelming demand, a critical piece of the plan has fallen far short of its mission. In just a few short weeks, the Restaurant Revitalization Fund generated more than $75 billion in application requests from restaurants across the nation with only $28.6 billion available in funding. This gap left more than 177,000 restaurants and bar applications without any federal funding relief.

The Restaurant Revitalization Fund must be replenished to fund the unaddressed applications and help America’s restaurants keep their doors open.

As a proud partner to more than 300,000 restaurants nationwide, we ask that you support the much-needed additional funding to restore the Restaurant Revitalization Fund by supporting bills to get this done, in the House (H.R.3807 and H.R.4568) and the Senate (S.2091 and S.2675).

Since the start of the pandemic, Grubhub has worked hard to support restaurants throughout the country. We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to directly support restaurants, including over $130 million in reduced or waived fees to help drive more business when their dining rooms were closed. Grubhub’s diners have additionally donated more than $30 million directly to those impacted by the pandemic.

At Grubhub, we are committed to supporting restaurants for as long as it takes them to recover. Today, we are asking for your support of the legislation that will replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund and provide critical support for local independent restaurants in communities across America.
